Patek Philippe watches span a wide range of case geometries. The Calatrava family uses elegant dress proportions, the Nautilus and Aquanaut carry integrated-style sport cases, while the Gondolo, World Time, and Grand Complications families each have their own geometry. Getting the strap width right is the first step; everything else is style.

Model family overview

Calatrava

The Calatrava is a round dress watch produced since 1932. Most references use a 20mm lug width, though early and smaller models such as the 5119 use 19mm and some vintage or compact variants use 18mm. Alligator leather or fine calf straps with a thin profile suit the Calatrava best. Avoid thick or padded straps that bulk up the case-strap transition.

Nautilus

Designed by Gerald Genta and introduced in 1976, the Nautilus has an octagonal bezel and an integrated bracelet on most references. On the 5711 and later 5726 the bracelet is fully integrated and cannot be swapped for a standard lugged strap without modification. The older Nautilus 3800 does accept a regular 20mm strap on its lug ends. If you are fitting an aftermarket strap to a Nautilus, confirm whether your reference has drilled lug holes or a flush-integrated spring bar system.

Aquanaut

Introduced in 1997, the Aquanaut uses a rounded octagonal case and ships with a proprietary embossed rubber strap. The strap-case attachment is not a standard spring-bar system. Aftermarket rubber or silicone straps in 22mm can be made to fit with some adaptation, but the factory strap mounting system differs from standard watch lugs. Confirm the specific generation of your Aquanaut before ordering a replacement.

Annual Calendar

Annual Calendar references such as the 5396 use 22mm lug widths and pair naturally with wide-profile leather or alligator straps. These are traditional lugged cases and accept any standard 22mm strap with a deployant or pin buckle.

Gondolo

The Gondolo uses a rectangular or cushion-shaped case derived from pocket-watch design. Most references use 18mm lugs. A slim leather strap with a tang buckle complements the case shape better than a wide padded option.

World Time

World Time references are large dress pieces with 18mm lug widths despite their sizeable dials. A leather strap with moderate thickness suits the case. The Calatrava Pilot Travel Time, which adds a world-time function to the Calatrava architecture, also uses 18mm.

Grand Complications (Perpetual Chrono, Celestial)

Grand Complications such as the Perpetual Chrono White Gold and Celestial 6102 use 22mm lug widths. Leather or alligator straps with a deployant clasp suit these references. Both are traditional lugged cases.

How to measure your lug width

1. Remove the existing strap or bracelet.
2. Use a digital caliper or ruler to measure the gap between the two lugs where the spring bar sits.
3. Take the measurement in millimetres. A 20mm gap means you need a 20mm strap.
4. If you get a reading between standard sizes (for example 20.5mm), order the smaller size. Strap end widths compress slightly to fit.

Choosing a strap material

Most Patek Philippe dress references suit leather best. Alligator is the factory standard on many Calatrava and Grand Complications models. Calfskin is a cost-effective and comfortable alternative. For the Aquanaut and sports references, rubber or silicone straps are appropriate. NATO straps work technically on models with standard lug holes but change the character of a dress watch significantly; they suit the Calatrava Pilot line better than the classic Calatrava.
